As Seen in the Island Packet: Society of Bluffton Artists plans youth summer arts camps

The Society of Bluffton Artists is offering children the opportunity to learn a variety of art skills taught by some of the area’s leading artists.

Each workshop will be held at the SOBA Center for Creative Arts, next door to the SOBA Gallery at 8 Church St. in Bluffton.

The workshops are as follows:

  • From Finger Painting to Portraits for ages 7-14, June 15-19 and July 13-17; 1 to 3 p.m. Instructor Pamela Brown will lead this fun series of workshops with a different subject each day of the week. Mondays are for finger painting, Tuesdays are for cartooning, Wednesdays will feature graffiti, Thursdays collage and Fridays are for self portraits. Cost: $40 per class includes all materials.
  • Mythical Beasts and Beauties for ages 9-12, July 7-10; 9 a.m. to noon. Students, led by artist and instructor Lind Hollingsworth, will create unicorns, dragons, ogres and fairies, creating a number of pieces in a variety of media. Cost: $120
  • Putting it into Perspective for ages 12 and up, July 7-10; 1 to 4 p.m. This class, with instructor Lind Hollingsworth, will familiarize students with the basic concepts of linear perspective and then apply them to their art. Cost: $120
  • Paper Mache Sculpture for ages 9-12 and 12 and up, July 27-31; ages 9-12, 9 a.m. to noon; ages 12 and up, 1 to 4 p.m. With instructor Lind Hollingsworth, students will create a 3-D creature and a vessel out of paper mache, using a variety of materials including paper-based clay and recycled materials. The sculptures will be finished in acrylic paint and collage. Cost $160
