Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) Workshop Schedule

SOBA’s workshops offer the opportunity to learn a variety of art skills as taught by some of the region’s leading artists, and will provide attendees the opportunity to nurture, and foster, their love of art. Each workshop will be held at the SOBA Center for Creative Arts, located next door to the SOBA Gallery at 8 Church Street in Bluffton.  All SOBA workshops are led by established artists, and include instruction and hands-on demonstrations.

Watercolor Basics with Instructor Mary Ann Putzier
August 12, 13, 14;  1 – 4 pm

Painting with pigment and water is about as simple as it can get! Watercolor is a very popular medium, relatively inexpensive, easily transported and Is very immediate. In this class you will learn how to get started using basic materials and techniques. We will allude to the general art elements and principles which we will apply to our medium.  Making art is exciting, challenging and so therapeutic! A supply list is available upon registration. If you choose, the instructor is offering a simple starter kit:  paper, brushes, paint and a small palette at $25, payable to the instructor. Minimum 6 students; maximum 10.   Cost:  $165 members; $175 non-members

Open Class for Exploration of Abstract Art with Instructor Art Cornell
September 4, 11, 18, 25 (4 Fridays);  9 am – 12 noon

For artists who want to approach and/or refine their skills in developing abstract art work. Subjects discussed will include minimalism, drip, impressionism, and other abstract forms. Composition, texture, points of focus, presentation, framing, pricing, signage, title, and artist responsibility. We will be using primarily heavy acrylic paint, but other types (water color, oil, liquid acrylic, etc.) are acceptable. Bring in works in progress regardless of degree of completion to be critiqued, as well as examples of art work you may have seen and/or would like to emulate. Intense but fun! All levels however basic knowledge of painting necessary.
Minimum 5 students; maximum 15. Cost: $120 members; $135 non-members

Oil Painting with Instructor Mary Segars
September 15, 16, 17;  10 am – 2 pm

Mary Grayson Segars has recently won THE BEST IN SHOW AWARD for her body of work at Piccolo Spoleto Festival this past May. An oil painter known for her use of bold color and light/shadows, Mary will explain the process of oil painting and will discuss its key elements, composition, color mixing and value, etc, through daily demonstrations and personal instruction. Her demonstrations are just fabulous as she talks as she paints explaining what and why she is doing what she is doing. Minimum of 8 students so come on and invite your friends as well! Cost: $240 members; $255 non-members

Acrylic Painting with Instructor Dennis Lake
October 7, 8, 9; 10 am – 1 pm

Taught by the winner of the Peoples’ Choice award from the SOBA judged member show, students will become familiar with acrylic paints and techniques with an accent on realism. They will accomplish a landscape or still life painting. Bring your own pictures or use one supplied by the instructor.  Both new students and more accomplished ones will enjoy the freedom to experiment and discover the beauty of this medium with instructor demos, guidance and critique. Cost: $90 members; $105 non-members

Landscape Painting with Instructor Chris Groves
October 13, 14, 15;  9 am – 4 pm

Back by popular demand – Charleston landscape artist Chris Groves returns to offer his popular landscape class. Techniques of drawing along with preliminary charcoal sketches, value and color studies plus fundamentals of color mixing will be taught in preparation for the final painting. Lectures, slide analysis and individual critiques will complement instructor demo and plein air painting as well as painting in the studio from reference materials will serve to complete the workshop experience. Cost: members $450; non-members  $475

Mixed Media – Layers and Texture with Instructor Anne Hakala
October 16, 23, 30 (3 Fridays); 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

You will learn techniques on how to build up the surface, plus scraping, cutting, sanding and spreading the paint. Collage will be mixed in there as well. You will start working on several pieces and build on them during the class. It will be fun and informative. A materials list is forwarded upon receipt of registration of the class.

Day Dreaming with Instructor Karen Langley
October 20, 21, 22;  10 am – 5 pm

Come and paint with Karen Langley from Columbia. Very vibrant realistic as well as abstract art. She is spontaneous and a fun person who also loves art. This should be a fun class, stress free. Bring your paints and supplies and let’s get going!   Minimum: 8 students Cost: members $255; non-members $270

Understanding Your Digital Camera
October 28;  9 am – 12 noon
Photographer Corky Burt will share practical knowledge about the operation of digital cameras and how to select the best setting for the situation that is being photographed.
Cost: $30 members; $45 non-members

Painting the Lowcountry with Palette Knife
November 9;  9 am – 4 pm
Instructor Jim Lewis
Oil or acrylic. Paint a painting following instructions in the studio. Our beautiful marsh landscapes offer the perfect opportunity to integrate the colors of the sky into the foreground. We will investigate the basics of color mixing, value, and perspective, with only very simple drawing required. Relying on the palette knife, and some brush work, will also be an opportunity to loosen up, simplify, and let color and expression make the statement. Beginner to advanced levels welcome.
Cost: $60 members; $75 non-members

Seven Keys to Successful Painting
November 10;  9 am – 4 pm
Accomplished artist and instructor at the university level, Jim Lewis, leads this workshop that looks at the principles that make paintings work. Explore and discover your own approach and attitude within these guidelines and learn how to avoid common failures and become a more confident painter.
Cost: $60 members; $75 non-members

Color Theory
November 11  10 am – 1 pm
