Local Authors Lynn & Cele Seldon Sign Books

The Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) invites the community to an afternoon of local flavor, literary adventure, and artful giving. From 2-4 p.m. November 20, the SOBA Art School (8 Church Street, Old Town Bluffton) will host a book signing and fundraiser with celebrated Lowcountry authors Lynn and Cele Seldon, co-authors of the newly released 100 Things to Do in the South Carolina Lowcountry Before You Die.

Guests will enjoy refreshments and have the opportunity to meet the authors, who will be signing copies of their latest book. A portion of every book sold will benefit SOBA’s 18th annual Naomi McCracken High School Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to deserving graduating seniors pursuing careers in the visual arts.

The event is part of SOBA’s Holiday Scholarship Fundraiser, celebrating community creativity and education. Visitors can also explore SOBA’s Holiday Market, filled with handcrafted art, jewelry, pottery, photography, and more — perfect for holiday gifting.

Released last month by Reedy Press, 100 Things to Do in the South Carolina Lowcountry Before You Die completes the Seldons’ acclaimed travel trilogy, which also includes 100 Things to Do in Charleston Before You Die and 100 Things to Do in Savannah Before You Die. The book offers readers dozens of destinations and experiences from Edisto Island to Daufuskie Island, including Walterboro, Beaufort, St. Helena Island, Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, and more — making it a must-have guide and ideal holiday gift for locals and visitors alike.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Lynn and Cele to SOBA,” said Karen Richards, President of the Society of Bluffton Artists. “This event is a wonderful opportunity to support both the arts and local authors — and to give back to the next generation of artists through our scholarship program.”

The Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) is pleased to present “Flight-n-Fancy” by Janet Urbanic July Featured Artist Exhibit, on display from July 6 through August 2 at the SOBA Gallery in Old Town Bluffton. An opening reception is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Thursday, July 10 and is free and open to the public.

Urbanic’s artwork reflects her deep appreciation for the beauty of the Lowcountry, particularly its captivating birds, serene marshes, and vibrant wetlands. Working primarily in oil and watercolor batik, she brings a gentle, often whimsical approach to her compositions, exploring the emotional connections found in nature and human relationships.

“I try to capture the softer side of life through my brush,” Urbanic said. “Whether it’s the grace of a heron or the whimsy of a watercolor batik, I’m inspired daily by the beauty that surrounds us.”

A native of Ohio, Urbanic relocated to Sun City nearly six years ago after retiring from a 25-year corporate career. She began painting in oils through a class offered by the Cleveland Museum of Art, building upon a creative foundation that began with teaching ceramics and china painting. Urbanic holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Hiram College, where she also pursued her love of art through elective coursework — including a formative trip to Paris to study the works of master painters.

Owen’s unique background as a creative artist, graphic designer, and yoga teacher gives her a rare ability to simplify complex concepts, making them accessible, relatable, and profoundly inspiring.

“Whether you’re an artist eager to infuse sacred geometry into your work, a seeker curious about the intersection of science, spirituality, and the natural world, or simply someone who loves exploring new ideas, this event is for you!” said Owens.

Owens, an accomplished visionary artist, photographer, and yoga teacher, combines her expertise in graphic design with her passion for spirituality and nature to create intricate mandalas, surreal landscapes, and fine art photography. Her latest collection, “Elemental Alchemy,” draws inspiration from the five elements—Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Ether—inviting viewers to connect with themes of growth, transformation, and consciousness.

“In times of uncertainty, my art reconnects us to awe, peace, possibility, and a sense of something greater than ourselves,” Owens shared.

A longtime graphic designer with over 40 years of experience, Gloria’s work bridges the gap between traditional artistic techniques and modern digital innovation. Each piece is meticulously crafted, printed on substrates like canvas and metal, and presented as limited-edition prints. No A.I is involved. Her art has been described as “transcendent,” “luminous,” and “evocative.”

This exhibition marks an exciting opportunity to experience Owens’ unique artistic vision, which merges sacred geometry with the natural world. It is a must-see for art enthusiasts, yoga practitioners, and anyone seeking awe & inspiration.

The community is warmly invited to the opening reception on Friday, October 11, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., where guests can meet the artist and immerse themselves in her thought-provoking works.

Jane Capraro’s creative journey is deeply influenced by her father, John Kuller, an illustrator and oil painter, whose legacy she honors by signing her pieces with her maiden name, “Kuller.” After a successful banking career in New York City, Jane returned to her first love, painting, and began exploring the world of abstract and abstract expressionism under the mentorship of Missy Gentile at SOBA. Her artistic evolution has led her to create works filled with energy, hidden meanings, and raw emotional honesty.

In 2024, Jane received the prestigious “Best in Show” award for her abstract piece “The Queen.” Her work continues to gain recognition in the local art community, with her pieces currently on display at Alexander’s Restaurant on Hilton Head Island and at the SOBA Gallery.

In her artist’s statement, Jane reflects on the emotional and freeing process of creating abstract art. She shares, “Painting in abstract is an emotional, freeing, and creative force that I use to interpret and express my vision of the world within and around me. I aim to create art that is transcendent, pointing the viewer into different worlds that may be humorous, magical, peaceful, sad, or may speak of an injustice or challenge.”

John Meckley presents “Lowcountry Backyard” art exhibit May 6-June 2

The SOBA featured artist exhibit will run from May 6-June 2 with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. May 10

John Meckley’s May art exhibit at The Society of Bluffton Artists’ gallery in Old Town Bluffton will reflect the South Carolina Lowcountry’s beautiful marshes and majestic egrets.

“Lowcountry Backyard” art exhibit will show from May 6-June 2  with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. May 10 at the SOBA gallery.

“What inspires my brushstrokes to a canvas here in the Lowcountry are the images of soft, warm breezes floating on top of the many coloring changing marsh grasses,” Meckley said. “Also inspiring is how the white Egrets seem to glide effortlessly in slow motion across the backdrop of the majestic skies, making the long journey back to their tree top nests.”

Meckley traces his artistic roots back to the age of 13. His inherent love for art blossomed through self-taught techniques, drawing inspiration from the timeless masterpieces of Rembrandt and the esteemed Wyeth family artists. Meckley’s unique style intertwines elements of these revered artists with his own signature of soft, smooth, and warm brush strokes, complemented by a carefully curated palette of warm, earthy tones. His subjects emanate a profound sense of serenity and tranquility, inviting viewers into a world of contemplation and peace.

Meckley’s artistic journey took a significant turn at the age of 17 when he clinched his first Juried art show award in Pennsylvania. Since then, his talent has garnered widespread acclaim, earning him numerous accolades in juried exhibitions across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida, and South Carolina. Notably, his exceptional craftsmanship has been recognized on an international scale, with one of his masterpieces proudly adorning the walls of the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

However, it was a pivotal moment two years ago that marked a profound shift in Meckley’s artistic focus. Relocating to the picturesque surroundings of Bluffton, South Carolina, he found himself enraptured by the breathtaking beauty of the landscape. A transformative experience unfolded as he drove across a bridge, with the gentle patter of rain and the radiant glow of the sun casting a surreal ambiance. A vibrant rainbow arched across the sky, while a mesmerizing flock of Egrets danced gracefully across the marshes. In that transcendent moment, Meckley felt an undeniable connection to nature, interpreting it as a divine sign guiding his artistic path.

Missy Gentile Presents “Action Painting” Jan. 2-28

The SOBA Featured Artist Exhibit Will Run Jan. 2-28 with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Jan. 11

Missy Gentile typically begins her abstract painting classes with a quote from the artist Helen Frankenthaler: “One of the first rules is no rules.” She will apply this same philosophy with her upcoming featured artist exhibit in January at The Society of Bluffton Artists gallery in Old Town Bluffton.

The exhibit will run Jan. 2-28 with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Jan. 11 at The SOBA gallery on Church Street. These events are free and open to the public.

“Action Painting” will feature several pieces of her abstract works that convey strong emotional or expressive content, breaking away from traditional processes. Gentile draws inspiration from her life experiences and her core values of service and human connection.

“My art reflects my vision of no boundaries,” Gentile said. “What the eye sees is what it is — How it moves you is most important.”

Much of her inspiration comes from her time living in Paris, France. She later settled in Houston, Texas for the next 20 years, dedicating her life to art and serving others. Missy created her first studio and art gallery. She volunteered in hospitals with cancer patients and for AIDS patients at the Omega House, where she facilitated connections and emotional care through sharing the creative art experience. Additionally, Missy taught in the school system.

Missy’s paintings are in collections internationally. In 2002, Art Business News featured her works inspired after 9/11. Her paintings also have appeared on the cover of PINK Magazine with a piece called “Feeling Her Power.” Missy continues to exhibit her work locally and teaches Abstract Painting at The SOBA Art School, and private classes in her studio.
