The finely detailed work of Mary Burrell will be on full display soon at the Society of Bluffton Artists Gallery in Old Town Bluffton.

Burrell, a first-place finisher in SOBA’s 26th Annual Judged Show last year, is the gallery’s featured artist for April. Her show will run from April 6 through May 1. An opening reception for the exhibit will be from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, at the gallery on the corner of Church and Calhoun streets.

Burrell’s artwork — with its distinctive textures, shading and detail — has been exhibited in restaurants, libraries, galleries, public offices and boutiques.

“Drawing is a form of meditation for me,” says Burrell, “and oddly enough, the more intense the drawing the more enjoyable.”

Her favorite medium is pencil, with which she has developed her own technique by working in layers. She also enjoys working with watercolor pencil, watercolor paints and acrylic.

Largely self-taught, Burrell always looks for new avenues to explore and challenging subject matter.

“If I fail or succeed, I have always learned something,” she says. “You cannot learn from an empty canvas”

Burrell lived in New York until August 2017, when she moved to Bluffton with her husband, Mark. She is a founding member of the South Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Women Artists, and served on the SoBA board from 2019-2020. Burrell currently teaches children’s classes at SoBA and gives private lessons.
