Peggy Duncan

Born in the Florida wilderness as it was in the day, I spent my early childhood exploring the lush forests and ponds surrounding my grandparents orange grove and plant nursery. Days were spent high up in a live oak tree observing wildlife and birds around and below me. I developed an early love of drawing and painting in response to what I observed in nature. In high school art was my passion, I won a small contest and the prize was a week internship at a large department store art department. This fueled my passion for fashion design and I attended a commercial art school after graduation to pursue this career. I was always a lover of cool clothes and especially elaborate shoes. I worked in the commercial art field for a number of years.

I moved to the South Carolina Low Country in 1978 and was a student of William Leon Stacks, who was a wonderfully talented, gifted teacher and painter. While being mentored by Stacks, I was also taught the fine art of painting restoration as he worked on many great paintings from museums and collectors all across the country. He taught me to find my own voice. He also taught me not to be afraid of color and to use it with passion.

With pastels as my main medium of choice followed by acrylics and oils I continue to listen to that voice. My work since the early 1980’s has been accepted in over 50 juried shows. I am signature member of the Southeastern Pastel Society, and an exhibiting member of The Appalachian Pastel Society.

Today my work hangs in collections in the U.S. and abroad.

I moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina in 2006 where I operated my studio/gallery in Bryson City, NC, known as The Artists’ House. In late 2013 I moved back to the small town of Bluffton, SC, where my new studio is located next to my home in Stock Farm. Having lived in Bluffton for 28 years, I felt it was time to “come home”

My work is available at the following galleries: The Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, SC. Wild Fern Studio and Gallery, 19 Everett Street, Bryson City, NC., The Society of Bluffton Artists Gallery, Bluffton, SC, La Petite Gallerie, 56 Calhoun Street, Bluffton, SC , Hilton Head Art League Gallery, Hilton Head Island, SC.
