Discover the expressive possibilities of soft pastels in this one-day workshop focused on mark making. Pastels are a wonderfully versatile, tactile medium, and every aspect of their use can be varied, how you hold the pastel, the pressure you apply, and the types of marks you make. In this one-day workshop, you’ll explore how these choices affect the mood and energy of a painting, from lively movement to quiet calm.
In the morning, you’ll experiment with a variety of mark-making methods, creating eight small studies from a photo reference, each focusing on a different approach. In the afternoon, you’ll develop a larger piece that combines two or three mark-making methods that best support your subject. Your instructor will have photo references or you can bring your own. Throughout the day, you’ll receive personalized instruction and feedback as you deepen your understanding of the pastel medium and expand your mark-making vocabulary. All levels are welcome.
