In this unique 3-day transparent watercolor workshop, artists will sketch and paint using a wide range of imaging skills unique to bird subjects. Painting birds in transparent watercolor requires an amazing orchestration of skills. Rankin’s observation procedures and simplified sketching recipe will provide the basis for drawings that will produce accuracy and great design. With the addition of watercolor, participants will employ a variety of washes, glazes, and blending skills. David will demonstrate these and share his recipes for actualizing the effects desired. Painting birds requires a much greater variety of colors than just about any other subject, many of which can often be at full strength, bright and vivid.

David will work with you on his most treasured and effective skills for painting even the most challenging bird subjects. If you love to paint birds, or have always wanted to, this is your opportunity to work with one of the very best.

David is the author of several books including Beaks & More and Fast Sketching Techniques. He is on the board of the Society of Animal Artists and a signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and Artists for Conservation. In 2017, he was part of the Artists for Conservation Exhibit in Qingdao City, China, and in 2019, his paintings were featured in the French magazine, Pratique des Arts. David’s paintings are also included in the invitational exhibition “In the Tradition of Audubon,” opening September 12, 2019 at the Cincinnati Natural History & Science Museum as part of their 200th Anniversary celebration.
