Gallery Display Guidelines

2-D “Wall Art” Exhibiting  Artists Guidelines

All art must be professionally presented, clean and properly framed. No cracked or chipped frames. If your piece of wall art sells, you may replace it with a new piece in the exact location as the sold piece. If it doesn’t fit, please contact the Display Director and they will re-hang your piece.

Plan before you register

  • 2-D WALL ART exhibiting members may submit one piece of artwork each month
  • Two (2) Change of Show forms must be attached to all pieces of art at drop off
  • Maximum size is 36″ x 40″ including frame
  • Minimum size is 13″ x 13″ including frame
  • Maximum weight is 12 lbs
  • All wall art is to be wired properly. NO SAW TOOTH HANGERS OR HOOKS
  • Framing Guidelines – see complete guide for framing below
  • The Society of Bluffton Artists, its volunteers, employees, agents or representatives will not be responsible for any loss or damage, however caused, to any work submitted for the exhibit.
  • ART WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL. NO COPIES or derivatives OF OTHERS’ COPYRIGHTED WORKS ARE ACCEPTABLE
  • Only Photography & Digital Artists may submit giclee’s or prints as wall art
  • Art brought to the gallery early or left behind will be stored at your own risk
  • Anything remaining in the Art School after 30 days will be disposed of

Work on Exhibit

  • Artists are not to move, rearrange art work or add additional art work. 
  • Sold artwork may be replaced in the same spot.
  • Replacement Artwork must be registered for inventory purposes with (Ginny, Cathy, Gloria)
  • Exhibiting artists may also submit their bio and a photograph of their work to be listed in our online directory of artists and update as necessary by filling out this form (link to form – do we have a form?)
  • Exhibiting artists are responsible for providing an artist’s Biography and placing it in the “Artists Profile” binder on the white shelf in the gallery
  • The Society of Bluffton Artists, its volunteers, employees, agents or representatives will not be responsible for any loss or damage, however caused, to any work submitted for exhibit.

Framing Guidelines – All wall art (except photography) must be framed or Gallery Wrapped

Framed artwork  

  • Must be 12lbs or less in weight. More than 12 lbs. will not be accepted. If in doubt, save yourself an extra trip and bring a backup piece.
  • Framed art that requires a protective cover and is LARGER THAN 18 X 24” must be glazed with plexiglass, not glass. 

Gallery Wrapped Art Canvases

  • Must be 1-1/2” deep.
  • Gallery Wrapped Art – the top, bottom and sides of gallery wrapped canvases must be finished and painted to compliment the painting. Gallery wrapped pieces must be wired.
    Bumpers may be included and placed on the back of the canvas.

3-D, Photography and Digital Artist Guidelines

3-D Memberships may include, but are not limited to; jewelry, ceramics, pottery, stained glass, woodworking. We do not accept fiber arts. 3-D Memberships are conditional to a yearly jurying process for both existing memberships and new memberships.

  • 3-D Applications may be made any time during the membership year; September 1 – August.
  • In the event that display space becomes available, 3-D membership may be reviewed and juried in during the membership year 
  • If the maximum number of 3-D artist memberships are currently filled then applicants are put on a waitlist and a Review and Jurying process is conducted in August, prior to the next membership year by the Board of Directors
  • Stained glass is limited to windows only.
  • Stained Glass artists may exhibit up to 2 pieces a month.
  • Ceramic, pottery, woodworking artists may display up to 5 pieces each month.
  • Jewelry Artists may display as much work as can fit in the allotted display space

Photographers, Digital Artists & Fine Art Printmakers

Artists in this category may not use stock or copyright free photos. All work must be original and created solely by the submitting artist.

When registering Photography & Digital Art The medium must describe the process used:

Examples:

  • Photography
  • Photography limited edition (with number)
  • Photographic Collage
  • Digitally Enhanced Photography
  • Photography enhanced with (watercolor, acrylic, oil, colored pencil, etc.)
  • Digital Painting

 

Registering Fine Art Printmaking – artist must identify the type of printmaking used

Examples: Lithography, woodblock, etc.

In addition you may submit Open Edition or Limited-Edition prints. If submitting a Limited Edition include the number of the print and number of edition such as 1/25.

 

Photographers and Digital Artists – Read the definitions below to determine your labeling

 

SOBA Gallery Policy on Photographic Manipulation

  1.  Traditional Photography Defined as an image captured by a camera with minimal post-processing (e.g., exposure, color correction, cropping, sharpening) preserving the original photographic nature.
  2. Digitally Enhanced Photography Works that use software to create brush stroke effects, digital painting overlays, or extensive texture additions or other  digital manipulation to appear more like an oil, acrylic, watercolor painting, pen & ink drawing, etc.
  3. Photography enhanced with … (fill in the blank).  Any work that starts as a photograph but has been altered with other mediums such painting or drawing materials.
  4. Digital Painting & Digital Drawing Works created with digital tools to appear as a painting or drawing
  5. Photographic Collage – layering of photographic images via dark room or digitally
