Each month, SOBA gallery changes over to display new artwork from member artists. The honor of being Featured Artist is awarded by the Board to members who have indicated they are interested in being chosen, who have been a member for at least a year, who have consistently exhibited excellent work in the gallery and who have participated in events and projects to support SOBA’s work.

Applications are accepted during the summer each year for the following calendar year. When the process is opened, details will be published in the SOBA newsletter and email blasts to our exhibiting members.

The applications are reviewed against the following criteria and final selections are approved by the Board.

Minimum Requirements to Apply:

  • Be an exhibiting member for at least one full year
  • Have at least one sale (excluding cards, bin art, or holiday boutique items) through SOBA in the year prior to applying
  • Have actively contributed to a SOBA committee or event in the year prior to applying
  • Does not have a featured artist event planned at another local gallery in the upcoming year
  • Was not a featured artist in the previous or current year

Featured Artists will be selected based on the following criteria:

  1. Track record of sales
  2. Level of participation in SOBA’s committees and events
  3. Artists who have never been featured or those who haven’t been featured in many years
  4. Years of membership (staffing members will be given precedence over non-staffing members)

If we don’t receive enough qualified applicants, we will open the application process to artists who were featured in the prior year. If we still do not receive enough qualified applicants, the featured artist space will be used for other purposes during the unused weeks.

Artist members should contact Ginny Cassidy with any questions. Ginny will be responsible for coordinating the exhibit logistics with the artist. The artist will be responsible for adhering to the timeline provided, and planning and paying for their reception. SOBA pays for advertising, videos and press releases. We welcome your interest.

How Featured Artist Exhibits are Promoted

The Featured Artist exhibits are heavily promoted by a professional marketing agency — including:

The Society of Bluffton Artists provides a promotional poster and 50 printed postcards to every Featured Artist. The Featured Artist is responsible for distribution of the postcards to promote their show. Additional print material and the costs associated with an opening reception are the responsibility of the Featured Artist.
